In 1979, a group of retirees living in Sandwich, NH got together and began hiking. Starting small and local, these like-minded friends would eventually become known as the Over The Hill Hikers, whose outdoor adventures would reach across New England and even into Europe, led by their legendary "den mother" Lib Bates.

After completing the prestigious New Hampshire 4,000-footers, the group sought out a new challenge and decided to create a hiking list in 1990 to complement the higher mountains -- a selection of 52 hikes under 4,000 ft. that offered spectacular views.

Compiled and edited over a period of years, this guide is tailored toward both experienced hikers as well as beginners -- young and old -- for which this list attracts many. It is the first comprehensive guidebook for these scenic hikes.

On p. 211 of the second edition prior to the 27th printing, a passage in the introduction of the Mt. Success section was incorrectly paraphrased from a blog post by photographer Erin Paul Donovan (ScenicNH Photography LLC) without providing proper credit. This was an error by the author and has been resolved for future printings.

Books ordered directly through this website are signed and personalized with the buyer's name. If you have specific personalization requests — a gift for example — please send an email to with the details. All books are wrapped to protect the corners and are shipped individually. When clicking the link above, you'll be redirected away from this website to the Square website for ordering and payment. Quantities for multiple books can be specified on the order page. The price is $24.95 plus $7.00 shipping via USPS for each individual book. All book sales are final. Due to the prohibitively expensive costs (more than the book cover price) to ship packages internationally, only US orders are accepted. For our friends in Canada, I advise picking up a copy at a local bookstore the next time you are hiking down here in New Hampshire.
